Clarte is a Chrome extension that explains words you select on web pages.
This policy describes what data the extension and its backend service
(clarte.onrender.com) process, and why.
Explanation requests. When you ask Clarte to explain a selection, the extension sends the selected word, the sentence surrounding it, the detected language, and a difficulty level to our service, which forwards the word and sentence to an AI provider (Groq, Inc.) to generate the explanation. We do not read or collect anything from pages you visit other than the text you explicitly select.
Usage limits. To enforce daily usage limits, the service keeps a log containing the requested word, the date, your IP address, and a random installation identifier (a UUID the extension generates locally; it is not derived from your identity or your device).
Account data (optional). If you sign in with Google, we store your Google account ID, email address, display name, and avatar URL to maintain your account and plan. Signing in is optional; the extension works without an account.
Feedback (optional). If you report an incorrect explanation, we store the word, sentence, the explanation shown, the reason you selected, and any note you add, to improve the service.
On your device. The extension stores locally (via Chrome extension storage): the installation identifier, your session token when signed in, and an anonymous daily usage counter. This data stays in your browser.
All communication between the extension and the service uses HTTPS. Data is retained only as long as needed for the purposes above.

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
